Course Introduction / Overview
Aircraft maintenance is the technical process that is performed on the aircraft while it remains in line or in base and aircraft are required for maintain and restore their integrity and performance to keep them in good working condition. Absence of or Improper aircraft maintenance and inspections can lead to major issues and could even lead to accidents resulting in colossal financial losses and probably fatalities. Appropriately qualified and suitably trained aircraft maintenance personnel are a prerequisite for ensuring proper maintenance of aircraft.
AACEA’s Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course is designed to equip the students with knowledge and skills necessary to perform aircraft maintenance, initially as mechanics or technicians and excel as professionals by subsequently obtaining aircraft type ratings and becoming aircraft maintenance type rated engineers.
The Aircraft Maintenance Engineering B1.2 Basic Training Course offered of AACEA covers the knowledge and practical training component of Aircraft Maintenance Licence in category B 1.2 – Aeroplane Piston. The course is conducted with the approval of the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL). Students successfully completing the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering course will be awarded the Certificate of Recognition in confirmation of having successfully completed the B1.2 – Aeroplanes Piston Basic Training Course, enabling the student to demonstrate basic knowledge requirement at Aircraft Maintenance Licence examinations conducted by the CAASL in the corresponding subject modules.
The Course is delivered in modular format and is intended to provide theoretical and practical exposure in aircraft maintenance in appropriate subject modules in accordance with Appendix I to SLCAIS – 66 : Implementing Standards – Personnel Licensing Requirements – Aircraft Maintenance Licence.
The course will be considered as an approved basic training course in calculating the experience required for the issue of Aircraft Maintenance Licence in sub-category B1.2 – Aeroplanes Piston and B3 – Piston Engine Non-Pressurized Aeroplanes of 2000 kg MTOM or below.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering B1.2 Basic Training Course consists of 13 IS-66 Subject Modules as stipulated in SACAIS – 66 for Category B1.2 – Airplanes Piston.

Other Information
Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) has approved the AACEA as a Maintenance Training Organization (MTO) under the Approval No. CAASL.147.102, authorizing the AACEA to deliver the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering B1.2 Basic Training Course as an approved basic training course.
The course fulfils the basic knowledge requirement of Aircraft Maintenance Licence in Category B 1.2 – Aeroplanes Piston and at the same time fulfills the basic knowledge requirement of Category B 3 – Piston Engine Non-Pressurized Aeroplanes of 2000 kg MTOM or below.
On completion of the course, successful students will be offered a one year training opportunity under the approved Aircraft Maintenance Organization (AMO) of the AAC, the AAC Technical Services (AACTS), enabling the students to fulfil the one year practical maintenance experience requirement for the issue of B1.2 and B3 Aircraft Maintenance Licence as given in SLCAIS – 66 : Implementing Standards – Personnel Licensing Requirements – Aircraft Maintenance Licence.
The course also provides options for students to undertake knowledge training in the subject areas of turbine engines, pressurized airframes and helicopters as optional training modules for purposes of acquiring theoretical knowledge in those subject areas.
The Aircraft Maintenance Engineering B1.2 Basic Training course offers students an opportunity to embark in further education and earn an academic degree in the field of aircraft maintenance. AACEA has arrangements in place for students successfully completing the course to join the BSc (Hons) Aircraft Engineering (Top-up) Degree offered by Kingston University, of London, UK, subjected to completion of Entry Tests conducted by the Kingston University and achieving the required English Language competency. Similar opportunities are also available to join the BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering / BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering and Maintenance Systems (Top-up) Degree of the University of South Wales of Wales, UK and BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and Management of the University of the Highlands and Islands of Inverness, Scotland, UK

Course Duration
The total duration of the Knowledge Training in the approved B 1.2 Airplanes Piston Basic Training Course is 1000 hours. and the duration
Practical Training, where required, will be provided to supplement knowledge training. The practical training will comprise of two elements, i.e., practical training on basic workshop / engineering tasks and practical training on aircraft maintenance tasks in systems and / or components. The total time allocation for Practical Training is 1000 hours and at least 30% of the Practical Training will be Live Maintenance Training (LMT) carried out in an actual maintenance working environment.
The full course consisting of Knowledge and Practical Training will be delivered in two years.

Entry Requirements
Minimum Entry Requirement
- Passes in six subjects at the GCE (O/L) examination with three (03) Credit Passes to include Mathematics, Science and another subject, in one sitting and a Credit Pass for English, obtained at the same or a different sitting.
- Students who fail to fulfil the educational qualifications may have the option of conditional enrolment on the undertaking that the student shall take the responsibility for meeting the educational entry qualifications specified by prospective employees. English Qualification
- A Credit Pass for English in GCE O/L or a Pass in a higher level English Examination.
- Students who marginally fail to fulfill the entry qualifications may have the option of conditional enrolment on the recommendation of the Director Studies with the undertaking that the student meet the entry qualifications before applying to sit for Aircraft Maintenance Licence Examinations conducted by the CAASL.
