Multi Engine Rating Course (MERC)

Course Introduction / Overview
No person shall act in any capacity as a pilot of an Aircraft, or attempt to fly as a member of the operating crew, unless the person holds a licence and, where required, a rating, issued or granted or rendered valid in pursuance of Air Navigation Regulations of Sri Lanka, both the licence and the rating being appropriate to the capacity in which the person is acting. Any student wishing to obtain a pilot licence, shall demonstrate the theoretical knowledge and flying skills, appropriate to the licence sought, to the satisfaction of the CAASL. The aim of the CPLC conducted by the AAC Flight Academy is to equip students seeking their Commercial Pilot Licence, the skills necessary for the safe and competent operation of Aircraft, both day and night under Visual Flight Rules and to train them to the level of proficiency necessary for the issue of Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). The CPLC conducted by the AAC Flight Academy is designed to enable the students, with Private Pilot Licence, to demonstrate the practical skills appropriate to the Commercial Pilot Licence, to the satisfaction of the CAASL. Satisfactory completion of Airline Transport Pilot Licence Knowledge Examinations in conjunction with successful completion of the CPL Flight (Skill) Test conducted by the CAASL will enable the students to obtain the Commercial Pilot Licence enabling them to subsequently obtain endorsements on other classes of Aircrafts and to act in the capacity of a PIC or a Co-Pilot of the Aircraft engaged in any operation other than Commercial Air Transport, and act in the capacity of a PIC in Commercial Air Transport of any single-pilot Aircraft or act as a Co-Pilot in Commercial Air Transport, both subjected to restrictions specified in FCL.060, under visual and instrument flight rules as appropriate. The Aircraft used for the CPLC conducted by the AAC Flight Academy is Cessna 152.
Course Contents

Contents of the training curricula of the CPLC conducted by the AAC Flight Academy is designed to fulfill the requirements specified in Subpart A – General Requirements and Section 1 – Common Requirements and Section 2 – Specific Requirements for the Aeroplane Category – CPL(A) of Subpart D – Commercial Pilot Licence – CPL and Appendix 3 E. CPL Modular Course – Aeroplanes, of IS-FCL.

Theoretical Knowledge Training is not part of the CPLC and therefore Theoretical Knowledge is not applicable to this course.

The Flight Training element of the CPLC consists of flight training lessons to ensure that the student, on completion of the CPLC, has a total of at least 200 hour of flight time including at least 100 hours as PIC with a minimum of one solo VFR cross-country(X/C) flight of not less than 540 km (300 NM) during which full stop landings at two (2) aerodromes different from the aerodrome of departure are made. Students without an IR shall be given at least 25 hours dual flight instruction, including 10 hours of instrument instruction and students with a valid IR shall be given at least 15 hours of dual visual flight instruction.

The outline of flight lessons of the CPLC are as follows:

Module 6A – Lessons designed to contain repetition of certain lessons of Module 2 in flight maneuvers and particular flight characteristics in single Engine Aircraft.

Module 6B – At least 5 hours of flying in lessons designed to contain repetition of certain lessons of Module 2 under PPLC in an Aircraft certificated for the carriage of at least four persons and have a variable pitch propeller and retractable landing gear (This Module may be omitted with the consent of the CAASL).

Module 6C – At least one solo VFR cross-country(X/C) flight of not less than 540 km (300 NM) during which full stop landings at two (2) aerodromes different from the aerodrome of departure are made.

Module 6D – Selected IF instructional lessons to satisfy the requirement for candidates without IR (If applicable only).
